Ant Colonies

Ants are closely related to wasps and first appeared 120 million years ago. Their survival success can be credited to their social organisation, their capacity to reshape their natural environment, and their defence mechanisms.

Ants form colonies that range in size from a handful of Ants to millions of individuals. These larger colonies are sometimes described as super-organisms because the ants appear to operate as a unified entity. Collectively working together to support the colony.

Ants in Australia

In Australia, there are approximately 4-5,000 ant species. Of these species very few are troublesome. Generally the pest ants are introduced species such as The singapore ant, the coastal brown ant, the argentine ant, the white footed house ant, pharaohs ant and the black house ant. These species infest buildings in search of water and food. They are capable of nesting indoors in wall spaces, ceilings and wall insulation.

Ant Damage

When dense populations of ants nest in the ground they can cause damage to the soil structure. This can cause crops to fall over and undermine the foundations of paths and small buildings. Several species of Ants are attracted to plastics and for this reason can cause damage to irrigation systems and electrical systems. In some cases they have caused house fires, by damaging the wires and causing a short circuit.
